Fresh off her Oscar win for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Jessica Chastain is chasing down a killer (played by fellow Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne) in The Good Nurse. Based on Charles Graeber’s book The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder, the new thriller tells the chilling true story of Charles Cullen, a nurse and serial killer who confessed to killing up to 40 patients over the course of his career. You can check out key art and a new trailer for The Good Nurse below, before it hits Netflix this October.
In the dramatized incarnation,The Good Nurse, mysterious patient deaths begin to mount up and the authorities circle are circling. That’s when Cullen’s co-worker Amy Loughren engages in a deadly game of cat and mouse with her murderous colleague. Like so much else in the film, it’s a chase based on real events: the real Loughren was credited by authorities as the informant who solved the case. Tracking down Cullen’s drug requests, observing his computer entries, even wearing a wire: Loughren went above and beyond to take Cullen down. The trailer and first-look images give us a brief glimpse at that search, as well as the film’s inherent conflict: What happens when you find out your work friend is, well, a real-life serial killer?

Chastain, of course, is no stranger to single-minded pursuers of justice; her performance as a steely CIA analyst in Zero Dark Thirty remains a masterclass in obsession. And Eddie Redmayne may not have a great deal of experience playing bloodless psychopaths, but when he does… oh boy, he does. Alongside Chastain and Redmayne, The Good Nurse also stars Nnamdi Asomugha, Noah Emmerich and Kim Dickens. It’s written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho) and directed by Tobias Lindholm (who co-wrote the Mads Mikkelsen vehicles The Hunt and Another Round).
The Good Nurse premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival this week before hitting select theaters on Oct. 19 and Netflix on Oct. 26. Just what the doctor ordered.
