There’s nothing “whatever” about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the anime adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s beloved graphic novels. And just like Scott Pilgrim’s band Sex Bob-omb, the episode titles certainly do not suck. (Yes, this is also a reminder for Stephen Stills to have faith in his musical skills.)

The series reunites everyone (and we mean everyone) from Edgar Wright’s 2010 live action film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World to reprise their roles. In a story that unfolds across eight episodes, Scott Pilgrim (voiced by Michael Cera) meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), but learns he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. Then things get even more complicated.
O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski are co-showrunners and executive producers of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Wright, the original film’s director, co-writer, and producer, executive produces the series alongside Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff, Adam Siegel, Michael Bacall, and Eunyoung Choi. Award-winning animation house Science SARU and UCP produced for Netflix.
“I think fans are going to have their minds blown by it,” Wright told Netflix. “It both honors the original books and the film in many ways, while also being in an ongoing conversation with them. Bryan is able to revisit the material with BenDavid in a way that reflects how he has changed — and maybe Scott has changed, too.”
Looking back on coming up with the series’ episode titles, Grabinski told Tudum that the first one, “Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life,” was plucked straight from O’Malley’s books. “‘Ramona Rents a Video’ is great,” he said. But he considers Episode 4’s “Whatever!” a particular favorite. “I hope that does become the new Lucas Lee tagline, or whenever you think of the character, you think of him saying, ‘Whatever.’ That would be my dream.”
