Running Point Season 2 Trailer: Kate Hudson Gets Her Head Back in the Game

The Los Angeles Waves are coming for that championship ring on April 23.

Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) is back, and she’s here to prove that Game 7 was a fluke. This season, Isla and her underdog basketball team, the Los Angeles Waves, are going to win it all. See the determination radiating off the court for yourself in the heart-pumping new trailer for Running Point Season 2 now.

From the mind of Mindy Kaling (Never Have I Ever) and taking inspiration from Los Angeles Lakers legend Jeanie Buss, Season 1 of the beloved sports comedy charted the reformed party girl’s ascent to the head of the Gordon family’s basketball dynasty. Season 2 takes back the court on April 23.

But with a new season comes new problems, and the Season 1 finale left plenty of room for underdog president Isla to do what she does best: think outside the box.

Running Point Season 2: Kate Hudson Breaks Down the Shocking Ending
    April 23
Four tired people in sportswear resting on an indoor basketball court, with office spaces and large windows in the background, suggesting a recreational break in a modern office environment.

In the trailer, Isla and her brothers Ness (Scott MacArthur), Sandy (Drew Tarver), and Jackie (Fabrizio Guido) reunite with their wayward brother Cam (Justin Theroux) after he unexpectedly returns from rehab early.

The eldest Gordon sibling says he’s a new man and that he’s happy to work under his little sister, whom he personally handpicked as his successor at the start of Season 1. But in a competitive family like the Gordons, a truce can only last so long. While his demotion has freed up his day-to-day (watch him read Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo at his desk in the trailer), his reaction to the book’s emotional ending indicates he may not be as reformed as he says he is.

Isla tries to keep the chaos under control with some help from her ride-or-die best friend, LA Waves chief of staff Ali (Brenda Song). But in Season 2 Ali may have some greater ambitions of her own beyond helping to wrangle players like MVP Marcus Winfield (Toby Sandeman) and wildcard point guard Travis Bugg (Chet Hanks).

One thing you can still expect, though, aside from Isla’s armor of stylish power suits, is more killer one-liners from every character in Running Point’s lineup. Hanks previously told Tudum that when he runs the game tape back and watches episodes, he’s most struck by how funny his colleagues are. “Everybody stands on their own within each one of their characters, and the way we all interact with each other just feels so natural,” says the actor.

The cast of Running Point Season 2 takes the chemistry off the court as well. After Isla and her fiancé Lev (Max Greenfield) call off their engagement in Season 1, she kisses head coach Jay Brown (Jay Ellis) just as he’s gearing up to move to Boston for a new job. But, if the trailer is any indication, both men are back in the game for Isla’s heart. As for who wins the tip-off? That’s up to Isla.

The trailer also teases a slew of fresh faces shaking things up in Season 2, including Ray Romano as the LA Waves’ new head coach, along with guest starring turns from Lisa Rinna, Ken Marino, Nicole Richie, Octavia Spencer, Scott Speedman, and more.

Ike Barinholtz (The Studio, The Mindy Project) makes an appearance as well. Like for Season 1, Barinholtz writes and executive produces alongside Kaling and David Stassen (The Mindy Project). Stassen serves as showrunner. Buss also executive produces with Linda Rambis, Hudson, and Howard Klein (The Office). Jordan Rambis produces.
