A Guide to All of the Callings on ‘Manifest’

    Wait, was that a gargoyle?

    By Marisa Roffman
    June 2, 2023

Since the very first episode of Manifest, the passengers of Flight 828 have experienced “callings” — feelings, voices or visions guiding them to undertake an action.

Unfortunately the callings are often vague, leaving the characters to puzzle out their exact meanings. Occasionally these visions are shared by other people, providing a partner to parse out the mysteries.

While the origins of the callings are unknown, Part 1 of Season 4 gives the biggest clue yet: The characters guessed they’re actually memories rather than foreshadowing or premonitions.

Which Couples End Up Together in ‘Manifest’?
    June 5, 2023
Melissa Roxburgh as Michaela Stone and J.R. Ramirez as Jared Vasquez Manifest Season 4.

“Given all that they understand right now, it’s a very viable [theory],” Manifest creator Jeff Rake tells Tudum. “If it’s the window between life and death, it makes them question, did they die on that airplane? [If] these are memories and these moments of divine consciousness [are] coming back to them, is it leading them in a direction that’s going to take them to the path they should have been on all along?”

Of course, anything could be revealed when the show returns for its final 10 hours. “There’s nothing that they have encountered as of yet on their Manifest journey that has contradicted that notion of callings being memories,” Rake teases.

Can’t quite remember each calling the show has explored? Here’s an episodic breakdown.

Family at airport.

Season 1

“Pilot”
Michaela (Melissa Roxburgh) hears “all things” referring to biblical verse Romans 8:28. The scripture is sewn on her now-deceased mother’s pillow.

Michaela hears “slower.” She insists the bus driver slow down, and prevents a child from being hit when he runs into the street.

Michaela and Ben (Josh Dallas) hear “Set them free” and think it is about dogs. They initially try to ignore it, but doing so they set in motion a chain of events which saves two kidnapped girls.

Michaela has a flash of the plane while at church; Ben finds her there, claiming he just “knew” where she was.

The passengers are drawn to Flight 828, moments before it explodes.

“Reentry”
Ben hears violin music and tracks it down to an 828 passenger, Radd (Curtiss Cook), who is playing the song in Times Square. Ben hears the music later, and helps clear Radd’s son of a crime he didn’t commit.

“Turbulence”
Michaela writes “own your truth” on the fridge with magnets. Later, she and Ben find out another passenger had heard the same message and was trying to abide by the same mantra.

An angel.

“Unclaimed Baggage”
Saanvi (Parveen Kaur) sees wet footprints and a mysterious gray woman.

Michaela sees a similar thing, and also hears “Save him.” Working with Saanvi, Ben and Michaela realize they need to help an 828 flight attendant, who helped stow Thomas (Sheldon Best) on the plane.

“Connecting Flights”
Ben continuously hears “It’s all connected.” While out with Cal (Jack Messina), he hears it again and Cal repeats it out loud, leading them to where Thomas is hiding.

A flashback reveals Cal saw a light while on 828 and said, “It’s all connected.”

“Off Radar”
Cal is psychically connected to a passenger who is being tested on by the government; Cal begins to feel the same torture the man is being exposed to.

“S.N.A.F.U.”
Michaela hears heartbeats, which leads her to a young man who was the recipient of her best friend’s donated heart.

Separately, Cal expresses his calling by drawing the young man.

“Point of No Return”
Michaela hears “don’t lose him.”

“Dead Reckoning”
The testing resumes on 828ers, impacting Cal, who draws the location of the testing.

While trying to free some of the subjects, Ben sees lights which guide them to safety.

“Contrails”
Cal knows a man needs his help.

Michaela keeps hearing “Find her.”

A couple looks at lightning.

Michaela and Saanvi follow a compass to the place where Thomas hid out; the sapphire they need was hidden there all along.

Marko (Nikolai Tsankov), a nonverbal 828er, draws his calling — a volcano.

Everyone ends up back on the plane, along with Eagan (who now has the sapphire). The group realizes that the looming death date applies to everyone. Michaela tries to plead with Eagan to give up the gem so they have a chance to survive, but he vanishes.

Man and woman in front of chalkboard.

An unconscious Ben furiously writes a message on a wall in the detention center, which ends up being a map of the facility that leads back to Daly.

Later, Cal goes back on the plane via a calling and is shocked to discover Angelina is still alive.

Cal sees an olive tree and realizes Fiona needs help. He’s able to project an image of a gravely wounded Fiona to Saanvi via a calling, and the doctor gives medical advice to save her life.

Meanwhile, Angelina projects multiple callings on Eden — in the form of Olive — reiterating how much Angelina loves the young girl and manipulating her into killing Fiona.

“Fata Morgana”
Ben sees bloody hands and Daly in the mirror.

Cal prompts a calling with Angelina, who shows him the sapphire embedded in her hand. He rejects her notion that they’re a pair.

Boy on plane next to olive tree.

“Threshold”
Cal sees a subway and the ground breaking. When he gets on the plane and sits down in 14 F, he sees purple vines.

Later, Cal sees a peacock in the middle of the woods and two glowing sapphire fragments on the feathers. The two pieces then come together.

“Lift/Drag”
Cal gets as many callings as he can handle at once, including a cricket game, a broken vial, the words “Every life is worth saving” (though Mick realizes it’s actually “Every life is worth living”), a sawing noise with rain and thunder, plus a buzzing noise and the numbers 1, 1, 2, 1.

But when Cal goes on the plane later to get more callings, they appear to be tapped out. He begs for help.

“Formation”
Cal pulls Angelina onto the plane for a final calling, asking her to help him save everyone. She declines.
