It’s all in the title: At first glance, Ani FaNelli (Mila Kunis) seems to be the Luckiest Girl Alive: She’s got the dream job at a prestigious magazine, a gorgeous apartment and a fun, wealthy fiancé. But there’s a lot more to Ani than meets the eye, and it’s about to come rushing to the surface. When a true-crime documentarian invites her to dive into her traumatic past, Ani’s world comes undone, and she’s forced to confront the secrets she’s tried so hard to escape. Based on the novel by Jessica Knoll, Luckiest Girl Alive is a new thriller about a woman who must confront demons from her past that she had hoped never to face again.

Alongside Kunis, Luckiest Girl Alive stars a cast of familiar faces, playing the friends and colleagues of both Ani’s new life as well as the haunting reminders of her past. Below, we’ve collected a guide to those faces.

Kunis takes on the lead role of Luckiest Girl Alive. Ani is a successful professional forced to relive her horrifying high school experiences. While Kunis may be best-known for her sunnier roles on shows like That ’70s Show and films like Bad Moms and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, she dives into this heavier title with aplomb . And why shouldn’t she? This is the same Mila Kunis who started a twisted friendship with Natalie Portman in Black Swan. She’s no stranger to more serious subjects— even if for some of us, she’ll always be spunky Jupiter Jones, of Jupiter Ascending fame.

In the film’s flashback to Ani’s teenage years, young Ani, who goes by TifAni, is played by Chiara Aurelia. Attending a snobby private school on a scholarship, TifAni struggles with bullies and several traumatic events that will haunt her into her adult life. Aurelia popped up as Sheila in last year’s Fear Street Part 2: 1978 and played young Jessie in the Stephen King adaptation Gerald’s Game.

Ani’s fiancé Luke seems like a dream guy, but when Ani’s past comes to light, it becomes clear that he’s less helpful and understanding than he initially seems. You may have previously spotted Wittrock on shows like American Horror Story and Ratched or in such films as Landline, La La Land and If Beale Street Could Talk.

The Friday Night Lights star plays Ani’s mother, who has a few guilty secrets of her own. Her relationship with her daughter is strained, to say the least — but Dinah always contends that she’s put Ani first. The five-time Emmy-nominated Britton most recently appeared on The White Lotus, but she’s got a filmography that stretches all the way from The West Wing through Nashville and American Horror Story.

Ani’s boss Lolo takes a liking to her young employee and offers her a job when she moves from magazine editor to a position at the New York Times. She’s played by Jennifer Beals, one of the original stars of the landmark series, The L Word. Beals also played a terrific femme fatale in the Denzel Washington mystery, Devil in a Blue Dress and has popped up in projects as diverse as Flashdance, The Book of Eli and The Book of Boba Fett.

Ani’s best friend Nell is a trust-fund baby who runs in the same circles as Ani’s wealthy boyfriend and future in-laws. Despite that, she’s loyal and dedicated to her friend. Nell is played by Justine Lupe, currently stealing scenes as Willa on Succession. She’s also appeared in Mr. Mercedes and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Andrew Larson is a staff member at the prestigious private high school who understands the difficult position TifAni’s in as a scholarship student surrounded by the rich and entitled. He’s played by Scoot McNairy, who you might recognize from performances in films like Argo, War Machine,12 Years a Slave and, of course, as Walt Breslin in Narcos: Mexico.

Finnerman is one of TifAni’s high school friends, a rebellious rich teen who turns to shocking violence in an effort to protect her. He’s played by Thomas Barbusca of Big Time Adolescence, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp and One Day at a Time.

A respected advocate for gun control, Dean Barton is a former classmate of Ani’s whose public persona hides a darker side.
