American Director Chris Columbus’ Take on Britain’s The Thursday Murder Club

“This is a beloved British book. This is all a British cast — a British crew! What is this upstart American, coming in thinking he can direct this kind of movie?” asks Chris Columbus in this behind-the-scenes breakdown of his directing approach on the set of The Thursday Murder Club.

Of course, this perspective isn’t shared by the cast and crew who share thoughts on how Columbus’ perspective brought this story to life. As Helen Mirren says, “He’s very American, but he has this incredible understanding, sensibility, and love for British culture. It’s a fantastic fit.”

Columbus has a blockbuster background, directing movies like Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter, and more. While a classically British whodunit has a defined style and feel, the cast felt he met the challenge effortlessly. “I’ve lost my heart to Chris Columbus completely,” says Celia Imrie. “He’d be far too embarrassed if he was here to hear me say that, so I can say it when he’s out the room!”

Columbus knew how loved the book was and felt determined to honor readers, bringing his passion and cinematic skills to set so he could lead this production with what Ben Kingsley describes as “great joy.”
