Virgin River may take place in a quaint small town, but that small town is populated with some very big personalities. The fictional Northern California city, located somewhere between Sacramento and the Oregon border, is filled mostly with locals who are fiercely loyal to their hometown, but also a smattering of transplants who have grown to love Virgin River’s typically low-stress lifestyle (aside from, you know, the nefarious drug dealers who operate nearby). But who’s who in the landscape of this small town? Below, our handy guide will help you keep the Virgin River denizens straight as you settle into a new season of cozy, close-knit adventures — and also some drug kingpin drama. In other words, the usual.

A Los Angeles transplant to Virgin River, Mel moves to the tiny community after her husband dies in a car accident. She’s first introduced as the type of woman who walks into a no-frills bar-and-grill and orders a cosmo instead of a beer, but she quickly takes to her new rural life. A nurse practitioner and trained midwife, Mel is hired as a helper to the local doctor (aptly named Doc) and quickly makes herself indispensable to him, and to Virgin River. Sparks fly between Mel and local bar owner Jack, and they eventually start dating (though not without a few relationship roadblocks). After having suffered a miscarriage years before, Mel is determined to have a baby. But when she discovers she’s pregnant in Season 3 after reconciling with Jack, she’s unsure whether he’s the father — or if it’s her late husband, via IVF. (There’s no ghost storyline in this show… yet.)
Other than Virgin River, Breckenridge is best known for her roles in The Walking Dead and This Is Us, and is also an accomplished photographer who specializes in portraits and cityscapes (you can check out her work on her website).

The owner of eponymous town watering hole Jack’s Bar, Jack is at the center of life in Virgin River. Like any good bartender, he’s an excellent pseudo-therapist to his customers (as well as to his Afghanistan War veteran buddies), and he’s also the town’s go-to handyman, errand-runner, problem-solver, advice-giver and general helper-outer. He’s expecting twins with his ex, Charmaine, but he’s still dating (and ready to raise another baby with) Mel. He’s also trying to regain his memory to figure out who shot him at the end of Season 2 (former employee and fellow soldier Brady is currently imprisoned for the crime).
New Zealand–born Henderson is best known stateside for his roles as Dr. Nathan Riggs on Grey’s Anatomy and porn producer Wayne in the 2022 horror hit X. (If you follow him on social media, you’re probably already a big fan of his semi-regular cooking videos.)

While Jack may be considered the town’s unofficial mayor of sorts, Hope is Virgin River’s actual mayor. Rather than being a smile-plastered-on-her-face-at-all-times type of politician, Hope is the local busybody, always personally abreast of the latest gossip (and eager to make sure everyone else knows what’s going on, too). She and Doc were separated for two decades before reconciling and rekindling their marriage — and not a moment too soon. They’re now helping each other through concurrent health crises (her, a traumatic brain injury from a car accident; him, a degenerative ocular disease).
O’Toole has been a working actor since childhood and has appeared in everything from Superman III to mockumentary A Mighty Wind. (She’s also no stranger to superhero content, having played Martha Kent for 10 seasons on Smallville and done a four-episode stint on The Punisher.)

Although Doc has gotten cranky and set in his ways over the years, finally reconciling with his wife, Hope — and adding cheerful but pragmatic Mel to his practice — softens him to the point that he begins to actively try to recruit help when he needs it, instead of stubbornly working solo. Doc doesn’t think he had any kids, let alone grandchildren, but his reaction to a mysterious teen showing up on his doorstep claiming to be his grandson might be a little kinder this season than it would have been in the past.
Longtime actor and occasional director Matheson has previously played a similar character — as rural doctor Brick Breeland on Hart of Dixie — and is also known both for his iconic comedy (Animal House,Fletch) and drama (The West Wing) roles.

Jack’s best friend and old army buddy just so happens to be the talented chef who runs the restaurant side of Jack’s Bar. Though restaurateurs have tried to poach him for their fancy San Francisco establishments, Preacher’s a fan of life in Virgin River. He’s also been dealing with a criminal coverup (as one does) and is now trying to solve a kidnapping. Full story? His friend Paige (Lexa Doig) is on the lam after killing her abusive husband in self-defense. Meanwhile, Preacher was taking care of Paige’s son Christopher until he was kidnapped by Paige’s ex-brother-in-law. That’s a lot, right? And Preacher’s doing all this while still being the lone person to feed seemingly the entire population of Virgin River.

In Season 3, Jack’s lawyer sister, Brie, moves to Virgin River. Originally, she just wanted to escape her no-good ex, but Brie quickly falls in love with the small-town life and may just stick around longer — especially after she starts dating Jack’s army buddy, Brady.
Allen has appeared on shows including Grey’s Anatomy, kids’ series A.N.T. Farm and Scaredy Cats, and Vancouver-shot dramas Nancy Drew, The Good Doctor and Bates Motel.

Brady’s arrival in Virgin River causes trouble with Preacher, who never trusted his fellow vet and former pal, thanks to Brady’s former habits of lying, stealing and general lateness. It turns out Preacher was probably right to worry about Brady’s return, as Brady immediately becomes involved with the local illegal pot farm, and eventually becomes the police’s main suspect in Jack’s shooting.
Not everything turns out badly for Brady, though, as he quickly falls for Brie and the pair begin dating — despite Jack’s misgivings.
TV veteran Hollingsworth has done stints on shows including Code Black and the short-lived dramas The Beautiful Life and Cult. He also starred alongside Demi Moore and David Duchovny in the film The Joneses.

The Virgin River teen lives with his grandmother after his parents’ death and works as a waiter and busboy at Jack’s Bar. Though he starts off with a squeaky-clean image, it becomes a bit tarnished after he begins dating troublemaker Lizzie. That relationship doesn’t last, though, with one of their conflicts revolving around Lizzie’s resistance to Ricky’s desire to be like Jack, and join the military. Ricky still has high hopes for his future as a Marine, though, even taking the entrance exam in secret.
Best known for his role in coming-of-age Canadian series Game On, Gurnsey has also appeared in shows including iZombie and Van Helsing and movies including The Art of Racing in the Rain and Wonder.

Sure, Lizzie starts out as the typical big-city bad girl who gets shipped off to live with relatives in a small town where she can stay out of trouble. But over the seasons, she learns not only how to love Virgin River and to respect her aunt, but also a bit more about what she wants and deserves to have in life. Lizzie begins dating Ricky shortly after coming to town, but the teen lovebirds split up when she learns the aspiring Marine has not been fully honest about his intention to join the military.

Connie, a longtime Virgin River resident, shares Hope’s penchant for gossip — and also her love for her hometown. Not only does Connie take in her troublemaker niece, Lizzie, she also steps in to manage the bakery truck when Paige has to suddenly flee town, and she keeps Paige’s secrets when Preacher begins to look after Christopher.
