A close-knit group of friends with seemingly perfect lives slowly becomes entangled in a web of secrets, lies, and distrust when a house fire leaves one of them dead. These growing tensions are at the heart of The Perfect Lie, a drama series from creator Dorien Goertzen (The Neighbors), written by Goertzen with Jop Esmeijer (All You Need Is Love). Based on a bestselling novel, the series stars Loes Haverkort, Teun Luijkx, and Remko Vrijdag and is directed by Dana Nechushtan (Overspel) and Margien Rogaar (Lampje). When Karen (Haverkort) and her family move to Bergen, the Netherlands, they leave behind a shaky past, with Karen having recently left an editorial position amid allegations. She and her husband, Michel (Luijkx), are swiftly embraced by a new community: a dinner club among a small group of wealthy people who never hesitate to indulge in extravagant lifestyles or give in to temptation. But the dynamic among them changes when one of their luxury villas — owned by Babette (Herlaar) and her husband, Evert (Jonker) — goes up in flames late one night. Evert is killed, and his wife and children barely make it out alive. As the investigation into Evert’s death unfolds, Karen discovers everyone in the dinner club is deceiving one another. And when she sets out to unearth the truth, she finds more than she ever bargained for.

Is The Perfect Lie based on a book?

Yes, it’s based on the novel The Dinner Club by Saskia Noort.

“It was a wonderful challenge to reinvent [this story] together with Jop Esmeijer and translate it into a series format in which tension is always at the forefront,” Goertzen tells Netflix of the adaptation. “We chose a different narrative structure and gave both the story and the characters a modern, contemporary twist.”
