There’s staying in for the night, which is always a good plan — and then there’s being stuck in your house with no way out, which is the nightmare scenario the Delgado faces in The Last House, now streaming on Netflix.

Greta Lee and Wagner Moura star in the original sci-fi thriller directed by Louis Leterrier (Now You See MeLupin). “The Last House challenges the idea of a safe haven, turning a family home into a hostile environment where survival demands unity,” Leterrier tells Tudum. “This is an ordinary family’s worst nightmare, pushing them to their limits to protect each other and exposing the fragility of security — and the desperate fight to reclaim it.”

A new featurette about the making of the film, which you can watch above, shows how everyone involved in The Last House was committed to making the family’s ordeal feel authentic. The actors worked with survival consultant Megan Hine to understand how the Delgados might realistically find ways to stay alive, while the cast underwent intensive dive training under the supervision of marine coordinator Ian Creed for the film’s underwater sequences. “I am certified as a commercial diver, so I could retire and go do that instead,” jokes Lee.

For Leterrier and actors, the attention to detail was all part of grounding the film’s bigger ideas in something audiences could recognize from their own lives. “I think people are going to recognize themselves in this film,” Moura says. Lee adds, “You really come to recognize that your family is the only thing that matters.”

What is the plot of The Last House?

The Last House centers on a family sealed inside their home with no way out. If that doesn’t sound nightmarish enough, their resources are running thin, and they must work together to survive not only a lack of essentials but also the mysterious, looming threat that is keeping them trapped inside.

“Growing up, my favorite things to watch and read were survivalist stories with a twist,” Lee tells Tudum. “So I was immediately drawn to this story. I love the questions this movie asks about our world and how we choose to live in it. And I was excited about the possibility of asking these questions in a new and entertaining way.”

“The storyline will evolve in ways that the audience certainly will not expect, but that is what makes this film so interesting,” Moura says. “There are layers and twists that I can’t wait for everyone to see.”

Was that a real person in The Last House Los Angeles billboard?

Yes! One man was “trapped” high above Sunset Boulevard. From Thursday, Aug. 6, through Saturday, Aug. 8, a performer “lived” inside a fully furnished living room built into a billboard 30 feet above the ground at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Selma Avenue in Hollywood. While attempting to carry on as normally as possible inside the enclosed space, he communicated with commuters and passersby below using a whiteboard — an eerie echo of the film’s central predicament.

Lee and Moura play Ann and Jason, the heads of the family of four.

“Ann is a rock,” Lee says about her character. “I’m so lucky to have had the chance to draw on all the women in my life who are the bedrock of their respective families. She has a selfless steadfast power that is unrelenting even in the most difficult times. She is the human embodiment of hysterical strength, the phenomenon where a normal person — in this case, an ordinary mother — can trigger an extraordinary surge of physical and emotional strength under extreme stress or danger. And it’s all in the name of love. That’s Ann’s superpower, just like so many other mothers I know in my own life.”

“Jason is a father but he is also a fierce protector of his wife and children,” Moura adds. “He knows he has to maintain that sense of calm and stability when everything is going sideways. He also has to look at himself and really figure out how he is going to get his family through this.”

Who composed the score for The Last House?

Yair Elazar Glotman is no stranger to thrillers. As the composer behind the scores for films such as Reptile and False Positive, he knows how to ramp up the tension with a few haunting notes. That talent is on display once more in The Last House, with a score that mirrors the family’s state of mind as they realize their home is now a trap.

“The tone is constantly evolving alongside the family’s emotional trajectory,” Glotman tells Tudum. “It starts in an intimate space — focused on warm family connection and subtle mystery. As the narrative momentum builds, the scale expands dramatically, shifting from introspective moments to big orchestral cues dominated by heavy brass, aggressive percussive textures, and distorted strings as their fight for survival peaks.”

Glotman was immediately drawn in by the film’s hook, and drew inspiration from the family’s resourcefulness in the face of danger. “If they had to adapt to survive with what they had inside the house, I wanted the score to do the same,” he says. “I began looking at objects as instruments, repurposing unexpected sound sources, and even treating a menacing, rusty door as a core textural element. We then took that same instinct to AIR Studios, capturing an 80-piece orchestra using unconventional mic placements and experimental playing techniques to give a massive canvas that same tactile feel.”

The full score is now available here

“Even after the door locks and the family feels safe inside, there is a relentless threat lurking just beneath the surface,” Glotman adds. “I wanted the score to maintain that tension between sanctuary and dread. To do that, I built the main theme to be dual-natured: It appears in warm, comforting contexts when the family is together, but mutates into something eerie and menacing as the outside threat presses in.”
