Three, two, one: The second season of Space Force is finally ready for liftoff. A year and a half after the military comedy premiered in 2020, General Mark Naird’s (Steve Carell) ragtag team of scientists, pilots and one very divisive but memorable social media manager will touch down on Feb. 18. The season’s first-look images promise the return of General Naird; head scientist Dr. Mallory (John Malkovich); F. Tony (Ben Schwartz); Dr. Chan (Jimmy O. Yang); Commander Angela (Tawny Newsome); Naird’s assistant, Brad (Don Lake); and his rebellious daughter, Erin (Diana Silvers).
Very loosely based on an actual military branch instituted by Donald Trump in 2019, Space Force’s first season follows Naird, an accomplished Air Force general and by-the-book military man tasked with leading a new space service branch (and, more often than not, clashing with Mallory). By the season’s end, everything is in chaos mode: After Chinese astronauts settle near the US base and deface an American flag, Naird decides not to retaliate, prompting General Kick Grabaston (Noah Emmerich) to take control of the team and attack the Chinese base. Then, they discover that the Chinese astronauts have also attacked their base. Basically, astronauts from both countries are left stranded on the moon with no resources and no discernible way out.
Along with somehow getting themselves out of that debacle, the Space Force will navigate a new administration and new interpersonal conflicts in Season 2. Catch your first glimpse of the new Force in the photos below, and get ready to shoot for the moon next month.
