Where Is ‘Queen Charlotte’ Filmed? A Guide to All the Royal Locations

Which stately English manor home is your favorite?

    May 4, 2023

At one point while filming Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Freddie Dennis had a real pinch-me moment. No spoilers, but it involves “dancing on the grounds of one of Britain’s greatest stately homes,” the actor tells Tudum. “I just feel so grateful that this is my life.”

Dennis plays Reynolds, the devoted valet and right-hand man of young King George (Corey Mylchreest). The series, which begins about 50 years before the events of Bridgerton’s first season, follows the relationship between King George and his future Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) as the two young royals meet and marry in 1761.

Queen Charlotte takes place in the Bridgerton universe, so naturally uses some of the same locations as the flagship show. But a new series means a new world to discover, so read on to explore the grand estates of the new episodes.

Buckingham House

Blenheim Palace, Hatfield House, Hampton Court Palace, Belton House

Blenheim Palace is the birthplace of Winston Churchill, and it also stands in as Buckingham House (later known as Buckingham Palace) in Queen Charlotte. Other interior scenes were filmed in two historic houses associated with the earlier Tudor monarchs: Hatfield House (previously seen in everything from The Favourite to the video for “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers), and Hampton Court Palace. The garden scenes were filmed at Lincolnshire’s Belton House.

Kew Palace

Belton House, Waddesdon Manor

Many of Kew Palace’s interior scenes — for example, the ones set in King George’s bedchamber or in Dr. Monro’s lab — were filmed at Belton House, while the botanical gardens, conservatory and field at Waddesdon Manor stand in for some of Kew Palace’s exterior scenes.

St. James’s Chapel

Merton College, Hatfield House

The on-screen chapel where George and Charlotte are married stands today at Merton College, Oxford, one of the first three constituent colleges of the University of Oxford, while some of the interiors and garden scenes were filmed at Hatfield House.

St. James’s Palace

Hampton Court Palace, Wilton House, Syon House, Goldsmiths’ Hall

Queen Charlotte’s St. James’s Palace is an amalgamation of several impressive locations across southern England. The exterior and some interior scenes were filmed at Hampton Court Palace, while other interiors were filmed at Wilton House (the sitting room and tearoom), Syon House (various corridors) and Goldsmiths’ Hall (the King’s chambers and the palace hall).

Danbury villa in Queen Charlotte

Danbury Villa

Dorney Court

Before the Danburys are titled and move to their own grand estate, they live in a magical Tudor mansion. In real life, that’s Dorney Court, seen onscreen in everything from Elizabeth: The Golden Age to Bohemian Rhapsody (and of course, Bridgerton).

Danbury Estate

Hampton Court Palace, Badminton Estate, Bath Assembly Rooms

Not long after being titled, the Danburys move to their new palatial estate, complete with land, cattle and even spots at Eton for their sons. Hampton Court Palace and buildings in Bath serve as the exterior of their new home, while other scenes were filmed at Badminton Estate (private bedchambers) and the Bath Assembly Rooms (the ballroom).

Untere Schloss

Ditton Manor, Wilton House

While Queen Charlotte was born in northern Germany, you don’t have to travel to the European continent to visit the manor that stands in for her birthplace at Mirow. The exterior was filmed at the historic Ditton Manor, while interiors were filmed at Wilton House (which also serves as the interior of St. James’s Palace on the show).

Royal College of Physicians

Queen’s House

When George’s ailments continue to evade his regular physicians, his mother calls in Dr. John Monro for an ultra-private meeting at the Royal College of Physicians, where he introduces his unorthodox methods to treat the young king. The Queen’s House in Greenwich stands in for the Royal College of Physicians in this scene.

Firle Place

The future Viscountess Violet Bridgerton is young Violet Ledger in Queen Charlotte, raised on a lavish property that shares a border with the new Danbury estate. Onscreen, the Ledger estate is played by Sussex country house Firle Place, which is a privately-owned home that’s also been used in several other film and TV productions (including 2020’s Emma).

Hackney Empire

In her younger years, Queen Charlotte had to get used to spending time alone. Later, however, her solo outings are a regular occurrence — including one to the opera, which was filmed at stately music hall Hackney Empire.
