Imagine being a teenager who’s dealing with all the chaos of high school — only to find out you’re actually the son of a god. Now you gotta deal with all the problems of the Pantheon, too. That’s exactly what happens to the sarcastic, reluctant hero in the Percy Jackson movies. The franchise follows Percy (Logan Lerman) and his crew of demigods in training — Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario), Grover Underwood (Brandon T. Jackson), and Luke Castellan (Jake Abel). They must learn to control their ever-growing powers as they go on dangerous quests to save the world. The films were adapted from a middle-grade book series by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Along with the seven novels in that series, Riordan also wrote three spin-off series: The Heroes of Olympus, The Trials of Apollo, and Camp Half-Blood. 

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

The last thing 16-year-old Percy Jackson (Lerman) expects when he goes on a high school field trip is to be accused of stealing the Greek god Zeus’s (Sean Bean) master lightning bolt. He also doesn’t expect to be attacked by mythical creatures called the furies. His best friend, Grover (Jackson), and his teacher, Mr. Brunner (Pierce Brosnan), whisk Percy and his mother, Sally (Catherine Keener), away. They’re taken to Camp Half-Blood, a safe haven and training ground for demigods. Soon, Percy learns that Grover is a satyr, Mr. Brunner is a centaur, and he’s a demigod — the son of Poseidon (Kevin McKidd), to be exact. 

Before Percy can prove his innocence to Zeus, a half-man, half-bull creature called the Minotaur is sent by the god of the Underworld, Hades, to kidnap Sally as collateral for the missing lightning bolt. Now Percy must take his friends and his slowly budding powers on a cross-country adventure to save his mom and restore order to Olympus. Directed by Chris Columbus, The Lightning Thief also stars Steve Coogan as Hades and Rosario Dawson as Persephone.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

In the sequel to The Lightning Thief, Percy returns to Camp Half-Blood to properly develop his demigod powers. But after a brutal and unexpected attack by a mechanical fire-breathing monster called a Colchis Bull, it becomes clear that something is wrong with the teens’ summertime sanctuary. According to Annabeth (Daddario), a fellow demigod and one of Percy’s best friends, the true lightning thief poisoned the tree that acts as a protective barrier around the camp in order to bring down Mount Olympus. Percy and his friends once again decide to take on an impossible quest to save the day — they must cross the Sea of Monsters, aka the Bermuda Triangle, to acquire a mythical artifact called the Golden Fleece, which is known for its healing powers. To make matters worse, it’s fiercely guarded by a behemoth Cyclops. Directed by Thor Freudenthal, Sea of Monsters stars Nathan Fillion as Hermes, Stanley Tucci as Dionysus, and Anthony Head as Chiron.
