Dark Winds is not your average crime drama. Set on a Navajo reservation spanning the Four Corners region of the American Southwest, the mystery series follows Lt. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) along with his two protégés, Sgt. Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Sgt. Bernadette “Bern” Manuelito (Jessica Matten), as they solve violent crimes in the 1970s. With each new case, the trio must unravel complex family histories, political corruption, and the way spirituality is intrinsically tied to law in the Navajo Nation.
After the dramatic finale of Season 3, in which Joe’s wife, Emma (Deanna Allison), discovers he enacted vigilante justice on their son’s killer and leaves him, Joe begins Season 4 with the realization that his job has turned him into someone he doesn’t like. Joe commits to solving one last case, that of a missing Native teen who ran away from her Catholic boarding school, before retiring and attempting to win his wife back. Bern and Chee — who are finally in a romantic relationship after seasons of tension — join him as the investigation takes the trio off the reservation and all the way to Los Angeles, where they realize a killer with ties to organized crime is searching for the same girl.
Alongside McClarnon (Castlevania: Nocturne), Gordon (The Liberator), Matten (Frontier), and Allison (Accused), Season 4 stars Isabel Deroy-Olson (Three Pines) and Franka Potente (Run Lola Run). Adapted for television by Graham Roland (Jack Ryan) and executive produced by George R. R. Martin (Game of Thrones) and the late Robert Redford (Our Souls at Night), the Western noir is based on Tony Hillerman’s novel series featuring Leaphorn and Chee.
