It’s summer in Stockholm, and a woman calls the police to report that she’s being attacked by someone brandishing a knife. The call cuts out — but operators trace it to an unoccupied vacation home. Later, the two responding police officers are found brutally murdered inside the house, and neither the victim nor the assailant is ever found. It’s the third time in mere days that an officer has been killed, and now investigator Thomas Berg is on the case. But to truly dive into the investigation and make headway, he’ll have to mend a relationship he’s desperate to avoid: the one with his father, a former investigator who was forced out of the squad years ago.

Blood Sacrifice is a love story between an estranged father-and-son duo, whose work draws them back together,” creator George Kay (Lupin) tells Netflix. “Setting this story in Stockholm, in that strange, haunting light of the Nordic summer, allowed us to build a crime thriller that feels uniquely Swedish and epic.” The five-episode series was directed by Kristoffer Nyholm (The Killing) and stars Jakob Oftebro and Peter Andersson.

What happens in Blood Sacrifice?

While responding to an assault at a home in Värmdö, Sweden, two officers — Rolander (Tainton) and Bengtsson (Aldgård) — are murdered in cold blood. When Thomas (Oftebro) and his fellow investigators arrive on the scene, the woman who made the call to emergency services is nowhere to be found. Thomas wonders if these deaths are related to a murder that previously occurred in nearby Söderhamn, in which another officer was killed. But the alleged perpetrator is already in custody, meaning he couldn’t have committed the most recent killings.

When Thomas is given the lead on the case, he’s cautioned by his boss, Lucas (Mossling), to be extremely discreet — he’s investigating the connection between the two cases, and it could land their department in hot water with the Söderhamn detectives, who may’ve put an innocent man behind bars. Thomas needs a brilliant mind on the case, but he’s reluctant to team up with the one person he knows could be of help: his ex-cop father, Alfred (Andersson), with whom he’s long had a fractured relationship. If the two can reconnect, they could solve the cases before another officer is put in harm’s way.
